The World's
Toughest Row

In December 2022, we will depart La Gomera, Canary Islands aiming to be the first “Pairs rowers” to reach Antigua. Once clear of the harbour in La Gomera we will be on our own until we reach Antigua. Out on the ocean we will be completely self-sufficient as we propel the 23ft boat for more than 3,000 nautical miles…
An endurance race like no other, rowers can be at sea for over two months during which they will be pushed to their physical, mental and emotional limits.
‘Steve and Pete will experience sleep deprivation, exhaustion, hallucinations, isolation, extreme weather and other vulnerabilities as well as health, nutrition and hydration issues.’

Waves can measure
up to 30 feet high

In the 2020 race, 3 boats were punctured by Marlin

Rowers lose an average of 15 kg’s of body mass during the row

More people have been in space than have rowed an ocean
We will row 2 hours on and 2 hours off all day every day
We will row in excess of 1.5 million oar strokes
More people have stood on the Summit of Mount Everest than have rowed an ocean
Fastest pairs crossing record is just over 32 days.

At it’s deepest point,
the Atlantic Ocean
is 5 miles deep

At the mid point we will be closer to the ISS than to any landmass

Our Causes

We have selected two very worthy causes and our goal is to fundraise £50,000 in total.

We are passionate about conservation and are supporting Durrell’s vital work recovering the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The project aims to restore lush rainforest to protect wildlife by planting trees and creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.

Alex Shears from Durrell said ‘We are so grateful to Pete and Steve for undertaking this epic challenging and for raising funds to revive the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. This incredible rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, and many of the species that live there are found nowhere else on earth. By supporting the Dragonfish challenge you are helping rebuild this forest, hand in hand with local communities who grow and plant the trees. This will give threatened wildlife such as black lion tamarin, puma, jaguar and ocelot a chance to thrive again.’

Beth Gallichan from Durrell advised, ‘Durrell’s mission as a charity is to save species from extinction, but in order to save species, you also need to save their habitat. We have worked to restore and protect some of the most threatened habitats on the planet over the last 60 years. This not only saves species, it has the added benefit of capturing and sequestering carbon, repairing the damage humans have caused to nature.’

Our fundraising journey with our first chosen charity, Durrell began in 2015 when we competed in a 150 mile 6-day ultramarathon through the Amazon Forest of Brazil. We are passionate about conservation and are supporting Durrell’s vital work recovering the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The project aims to restore lush rainforest to protect wildlife by planting trees and creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.
